Kate invited to celebrate UN International Youth Day with ABS

Kate was lucky to be invited to present the story of the clothing exchange alongside her PhD research into young people living sustainably. The friendly folks at ABS were all smiles as Kate told tales of swapping and scheming. When sharing the stories from her interviews with 15 young people who are all reinventing their lives to reduce their eco footprints, the audience gave knowing nods… especially when it came to addressing ‘housefill’ and wasteful consumption. She  also took great delight in taking a stance against the patronising stereotypes for Gen Y that the media and marketeers like to invent. Fun all round and a smashing morning tea!

Swapping in Sydney for the Melbourne Team

Last month, the Melbourne team represented by Felicity and Kate flew up north to run an exchange event for Waverley Council at the Bondi Pavillion. They were lucky to be leant a much-needed hand from the Sydney hosts Kirsten and Paula. Sally and her keen team from Waverley council were amazing and helped patrons swap like true professionals. And the 65 patrons themselves were swapping for the first time and did so with a generous spirit and refined grace. We saw some wonderful threads pass by at the check in and many happy faces filled the room (although a little of that should be attributed to the delicious cup cakes). Even with a little rain on the Pavillion this has been one of our most successful and enjoyable swaps. Kate and Felicity enjoyed sharing the new ‘swap capacity building program’ with Sally and the Waverley team and it’s the start of many more events within councils that we hope to host.

Exchange for Change

It seems a bit crazy to be promoting other swapping events on our own blog but this one is definitely worth a hearty mention. Exchange for Change is a new fundraising event by Oxfam that lets you experience the thrill of shopping. Kicking off on 1 September 2009, Exchange for Change involves women across Australia hosting clothes swap parties – get together with your friends and colleagues, swap clothing items that you no longer love or want, and help support Oxfam Australia’s invaluable work around the world.
