Collaborative Consumption

The Clothing Exchange has been holding swaps in Melbourne since 2004. But it wasn’t until 2006 that our idea really started to gain momentum, and then it really wasn’t until sometime in 2008 that would could start looking at all this crazy swapping as something more substantial than just a green roots organisation.

It has been a long road, frequently bumpy but always rewarding, and now it seems that we are not alone in our endeavors. The term ‘collaborative consumption’ has been coined by the authors of a new book ‘What’s Mine is Yours’ due for release in October describe perfectly what we do .. and what’s most exciting is that we are not alone! Check out the website and blog – there are some excellent articles around this topic.

Botsman and Rogers (the authors) coined the phrase Collaborative Consumption to describe the

rapid explosion in traditional sharing, bartering, lending, trading, renting, gifting, and swapping redefined through technology and peer communities.

They contrast the consumption activities from the 20th Century of hyper-consumption, to where we are going of collaborative consumption. At The Clothing Exchange we are really excited about this book as it solidifies what we are trying to achieve by offering a consistent, reliable alternative to consuming new clothing. Can’t wait to sink out teeth into this book…

Emma Grace has set up this fabulous new initiative called The Treasury … a fabulous name for an election year! The Treasury is an assembly of clever young things making new from old and good from bad, it is about remaking and renewing old jewellery in order to rediscover the lost art of thriftiness. Fix your Loot- Great initiative

Lovely ladies!
When we hear about a great initiative, we like to share it!

This one is in the City of Melbourne, so sorry for our subscribers in other states. It’s called Fix your Look and is held at my city studio (The Treasury).

They are classes that empower people to look beyond throw-away culture and learn how to fix and redesign, rather than discard old jewellery. Please check out her blog to find out upcoming dates and classes:
